Longfellow Day

Maine Historical Society, Portland, ME - 11/8/12 11:00 AM

Homeschoolers of Maine will be offering a day focused on Maine writer Henry Wadsworth Longfellow on Thursday, November 8, at the Maine Historical Society in Portland.  We will begin at 11:00am with a workshop, Longfellow, Poetry & Places, during which a Maine Historical Society educator presents the opportunity for students to explore the life and poetry of the renowned nineteenth-century poet.  Students will discuss the influence of Maine, history and place on Longfellow’s poetry during an interactive slide show presentation.  The students will also have the opportunity to write their own place-based poems.  There will be a break for families to have lunch.  We encourage families to bring a sack lunch from home.  This will be followed by a special tour of the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow House. This program works best for students ages 8 -12. However, younger and older students are welcomed. The program will be tailored to fit the students participating.

Longfellow and Revere Unit Study – HOME has developed this unit to provide students with the opportunity to research the American Revolution, the writing of the Declaration of Independence, the classic poem The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere and the lives of both Paul Revere and the famous Maine poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
