New England Heritage Days 2014

Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor - 10/9/13 8:45 AM

Due to the continued closure of our nation's national parks, HOME's October 9 program at Acadia National Park has been put on hold until further notice. We hope and pray that a resolution will finally come, and that we will have the opportunity to reschedule at a later time. Stay tuned to HOME on facebook and via our email updates for news of another date, as well as other upcoming HOME events. We hope we will see you at the next opportunity for homeschoolers to gather and learn together!

This year, we will stay close to home and our own Acadia National Park, and participate in their Carriage Roads Explorers Program!

Acadia National Park holds one of the most unique features of any national park. Within Acadia's boundaries are 45 miles of carriage roads, a generous gift to the American people from John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Rockefeller's determination to preserve extraordinary scenery and the horse and carriage lifestyle, combined with his love of road-building, resulted in a carriage road system flanked by sweeping panoramas and intimate views of Acadia

Cost: Park entrance and program is FREE for our group. (The availability and cost of carriage rides is to be determined.) Pre-registration is required, and space is limited. Deadline for pre-registration is September 25.

October 9 Schedule of Events (Rain or shine! Please dress for walking and the weather!)

8:45am Arrival at the Park: Jordon Pond House Parking  Lot (Please be on time!)

9:00am – 12:30pm:
Carriage Roads Explorers Program (for students of all ages!)

As particpants in the Carriage Roads Explorers Program, we will travel back in time along the carriage roads as they experience both nature and history preserved by Acadia National Park. Historical characters - engineers, laborers, stone cutters, landscape architect, architect, and philanthropist - tell the parts they played in constructing a carriage road system flanked by extraordinary scenery. Their hard work, determination, and talent, coupled with the vision of John D. Rockefeller Jr. created a lasting legacy loved by the millions who have spent time on them.

12:30pm: Lunch and Explore the Park (Bring a sack lunch, beverage in a sealed container and a picnic blanket  to lunch on the Pond House lawn. After lunch,  explore the rest of the park on your own. Be prepared to "pack it in and pack it out.")

Pre-registration is required.  Deadline for pre-registration is September 25. Click HERE to print your pre-registration form.
