HOME Online Classes

Homeschoolers of Maine is excited to announce that in the fall of 2013 we will begin offering online enrichment classes for homeschooling families.  To participate, families must have or establish a gmail account, and gain a working knowledge of Google Hangouts.  The courses will be offered once a week for one hour.  The length of courses will vary.  Pre-registration is required and space is limited.  There are 8 openings per class.  Classes begin the week of September 16th.  There will be no classes during the week of Thanksgiving.  Twelve week classes will end during the week of December 9th

The pre-registration deadline for these classes is August 30th.  There is a $25 late fee for those registering after this time, if there is space available.

HOME will be the facilitator for the classes.   It is the responsibility of parents to track and grade their children’s work, for record keeping purposes. 

 

Writing Made Fun - Yvonne Blake

Wednesdays beginning October 16 at 1:00 pm

This 6 week course will help your student get excited about writing.  They will create interesting charactes, develop exciting plots, learn poetry skills and more.  While this is geared for grades 3 - 8, multi-grade families and older students are welcome.  A companion lesson book (containing 20 lessons - more than will be coverd in the online class) may be purchased for $10.  The cost of the course is $60/family.

** Yvone Blake has homeschooled and also taught reading and English, grades K - 6, for 12 years in a Christian school.  She has completed the Journeyman Course through Christian Writers Guild and is a member of Faithwriters and the Maine Fellowship of Christian Writers  She has published a variety of magazine articles and books.  Yvonne has also conducted workshops at teacher, writing and homeschool conventions and is the adminstrator of Polliwog Pages, a website for promoting children's writing.

 

Maine Studies – Raylene Hunt

Tuesdays beginning September 17 at 10:00 am

This 12 week course will use Maine Studies by Diane Simmler as our text.   Recommended for 6th – 12th grade, but all are welcome.  The cost of the course is $120/family.

 

Geography – Raylene Hunt

Thursdays beginning September 19 at 10:00 am

This course will be divided up into 7 sections, and will span the entire school year.   Each section will vary in length as follows:  Africa 6 weeks; Australia 4 weeks; Antarctica 2 weeks; South America 6 weeks; Asia 6 weeks; Europe 6 weeks; North America 4 weeks.

While the Around the World in 180 Days (2005 edition) will be used, it is not necessary for individual families to purchase a text.  The class can be done without it.  Blank line maps (which are available free on the internet) will need to be printed out for each continent study.  Links will be provided during the individual sections.

The curriculum is designed for multi-aged use, so students in 1st – 12th grade are welcome.  The cost of the course is done by continent:  Africa $60; Australia $40; Antarctica $20; South America $60; Asia $60; Europe$60 and North America $40.  This price is per family.  You may choose to participate in all, or select only the continents of interest.

 

Library Skills – Raylene Hunt

Wednesdays beginning September 18 at 10:00 am

This 6 week class will provide an overview of basic skills and knowledge maximize use of the library.  The workbook will be provided as a .pdf download as part of the course fee.  No additional text will be required.  We will end this course with a field trip tot he Maine State Library in Augusta.  Watch for details coming soon.  This course is intended for 1st  – 6th grade with little to no previous library exposure.  The cost of this course is $60/family.

 

** Raylene Hunt is a homeschooling mom with 12 years of experience and holds a B.S., in Early Childhood Education.   She has taught Maine Studies online in the past, and has a passion for local history and bringing it to life for all ages. 

 

Bible: Ephesians – Amy Bartlett

Thursdays beginning September 19 at 2:00 pm

Ephesians - The Church: Rooted in Love, Walking in Power Chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world, targeted by
grace, sons of God united in a single family, inheritors, holy, redeemed, forgiven, raised from the dead and seated with Jesus Christ in  the heavenlies! How can you not study Ephesians!? Before Paul even hints at how believers should live, he lays a rock-solid foundation: who  we are in Christ! If you think you're just a cog in a machine, if you don't know your true identity, then this study is for you.

Praise God for what He planned in eternity past and is waiting to reveal to you now . . . through the study of His Word. Learn who and what you are in Christ and you'll want to walk God's ways the rest of
your life!

Completion of this course in a group setting is eligible for 2 Continuing Education Credits through the Association of Christian
Schools International.

This course is appropriate for high school aged children and adults.  Consider joining us for this wonderful time of fellowship as we open the Bible and discover what He has written for us!  Our first class will be informational in that we will discuss what you can expect from this class and what is expected of you. 

Books can be purchased through this link at:  http://store.precept.org/p-260-ephesians-precept-workbook.aspx  The cost of the book is $22.50 plus shipping.  You will also need to purchase a set of colored pencils for this class (Back to school sales are a great time to get these cheap!).  Beginning on August 1st, this study will be available in 2 translations (NASB & ESV). 

The cost of the course is $120/family.  Text is an additional fee and must be purchased separately by the family.

 

** Amy Bartlett is a certified teacher in Maine who received her B.S. from the University of Maine.  She has taught all grade levels from preschool through high school within Christian schools, co-ops, and homeschooling groups in Maine, California, and Colorado over the past 19 years.  Currently, she is a homeschooling mom focusing on the education of her own 4 children.  Her love for the Word of God is evident in her teaching of Precept Ministries Bible Studies for the past 7 years to various women's Bible studies, homeschooling groups, and co-ops.
