Movies & Literature Series

Unit studies in HOME's Movies & Literature series include vocabulary and comprehension questions for every chapter in the book. In addition, activities are included that cover the subjects required by the Maine homeschool statute. Including four literature units per year in your program will help you cover your language arts requirement for your third through sixth grade student. The Dangers of Totalitarianism is a high school level study.

Charlotte's Web

In this study, your student will use the book Charlotte’s Web as the springboard for integrated curriculum learning.  They will explore the movie, the book, the author and the topic of spiders.  Remember to let your student’s interest and ability lead the way.  These assignments are suggestions.  Please feel free to modify them accordingly, expanding where the student shows interest, if desired.

This unit accompanies the book of the same title.  Most school children in Maine at some point encounter the story of Donn Fendler and the nine days he spent lost on Mount Katahdin.  This unit suggests many activities across the required subject areas of homeschooling.  It’s a great way to draw many lessons from a single story. (Included in the Wilderness Adventure Collection.)

 

 My Side of the Mountain

In this study, your student will use the book My Side of the Mountain as the springboard for integrated curriculum learning.  They will explore the movie, the book, the author and many types of figurative language including simile, metaphor and hyperbole.  Remember to let your student’s interest and ability lead the way.  These assignments are suggestions.  Please feel free to modify them accordingly, expanding where the student shows interest, if desired. Rascal

In this study, your student will use the movie Rascal as the springboard for integrated curriculum learning. They will explore the movie, the book, the author and the topic of raccoons.

 

NEW! The Dangers of Totalitarianism

In this thematic literature study, your student will delve into the dangers of totalitarianism through the novels 1984, Animal Farm, and Red Scarf Girl. Background information, guided reading questions, activities, writing pieces, and critical thinking questions are provided as suggestions while reading. Connections to a poem, short story, two articles, and a film are also suggested as a way to make connections across multiple texts about the dangers of totalitarianism. Please feel free to choose which questions and activities your student would like to try, to modify activities in order to simplify or expand them, and to find other texts and films that further develop your student's understanding of history and literature about this theme.

This study looks at Maine’s history during the early years of European settlement through the book The Sign of the Beaver, by Elizabeth George Speare and its accompanying movie, sometimes titled Keeping the Promise.  (Included in the Wilderness Adventure Collection.)

 

Where the Red Fern Grows

In this study, your student will use the book Where the Red Fern Grows as the springboard for integrated curriculum learning.  They will explore the movie, the book, the author. Students will learn about foreshadowing, symbolism, character analysis and several types of figurative language.
